bush. She worked as a 4H leader, was active in the neighborhood ladies’ club and was faithful to her church. Elaine was always a gracious hostess and welcomed family and visitors to their home. She guided her family to respect and appreciate nature. She spent many hours teaching her grandchildren the beauty of the world around them. Walks in the woods, fishing in the creek, trapping gophers, and hunting squirrels were all part of the fun of going to Grandma Elaine’s.

Kenneth was an avid reader, historian, student, traveler, writer and conservationist and will be remembered in his community for his respect for the written word. His library was extensive with many volumes researched and authored by Kenneth. He and Elaine devoted time and study to the written preservation of family and local history. They were charter members of the Bloomfield Twp. Historical Society.

Kenneth and Elaine carried on the family tradition of making maple syrup. This sweet product was shipped throughout the United States. The “sugar bush” was a spring tourist attraction.

Kenneth and Elaine had 3 children: Kenneth Theodore married Phyllis Erickson of Burr Oak. They live in Eldridge, IA; Ruth Elaine married James Ryan of Waukon. They live in Lansing, IA; Dr. Edward Warren married Kay Henning of Decorah. They live in Indio, CA. Kenneth and Elaine welcomed 12 grandchildren.

Five years after Elaine’s death Kennet^h married Louise Sharp (1914-1995) from Alma, Ga. “Skippy", as she became known to the neighborhood and family, became a part of the life at Maplewood Farm.

Green, Kenneth Theodore and Phyllis (Erickson)

Kenneth Theodore Green was born in Geneva, IL to Kenneth and Elaine (Stoessel) Green. Ted’s sister Ruth Elaine Ryan lives in Lansing, IA and his brother Dr. Edward Green lives in Indio, CA.

K. Ted went to Oak Hill country school and graduated from Postville High School. He was active in 4-H and served as state FFA president in 1946. K. Ted farmed in Bloomfield Twp. before going to work for Oscar Mayer Packing Company in their livestock procurement department. He worked 40 years for this company.

On 22 Aug 1948 K. Ted married Phyllis Lydia Erickson daughter of William A. and Hilda (Foltz) Erickson of Burr Oak, IA. Phyllis was active in 4-H and music. She graduated from Decorah High School and Upper Iowa University. She earned her M.A. from the University of Iowa. Phyllis taught in Winneshiek and Scott counties.

K. Ted and Phyllis have 5 children: William, James, Frederick, Joseph and Patricia. William  Ossian, IA, married Marilyn Schnekloth. Their children are Timothy and Elizabeth. James,  Long Grove, IA, married Christine Ehrecke. Their children are Christopher, Emily and Gabrielle. Frederick  Edina, MN, married Robyn Romero. Their children are Nicholas, Natalie and Nolan. Joseph ; Lena, IL, married Trina Hines. Their children are Katherine and Joseph. Patricia ; Buckingham, IA, married Louis Beck. Their children are Neal, Lee and Lydia.

K. Ted has always had an interest in agriculture. He is the owner of Maplewood Farm where he spends much of his retirement time. He devotes attention to soil conservation and forest management.

Ted and Phyllis and their family moved to a farm near Eldridge, IA in 1970. They are active in the community and in Faith Lutheran Church.

Green, Melvin and Ann Eliza (Allen)

Melvin Green was born 6 Apr 1837 in Michigan Territory. His parents were Gideon and Dorcas (Aldrich) Green. Melvin moved to Iowa (Sec. 12, Bloomfield Twp., Winneshiek Co.) with his parents in 1850. He helped his father build the log cabin which was the family’s first home in Iowa. Melvin served in the Union Army, First Iowa Calvary, Company M during the Civil War. He entered the Army in 1862 and was discharged in 1865.

After returning from the war, Melvin married Ann Eliza Allen. She was born 9 Apr 1850 in Rockford, IL, the daughter of Stephen and Marietta (Cole) Allen. The Allens and the Greens were neighbors in Sec. 12, Bloomfield Twp. Melvin and Ann Eliza were married 3 Jan 1867. They became the parents of 4 children: Carrie (10 Jul 1869-7 Nov 1870), Edward Warren (24 Oct 1871-15 Jul 1951), Stephen Allen (5 May 1884-4 Jul 1961) and Lester (11 Jul 1891 -27 Aug 1891).

After they were married, Melvin and Ann Eliza moved to the black house on the farm east of his parent’s farm. In 1885 the family moved to a new house built especially for Ann Eliza 40 rods south of the first log cabin. This is now the home of the Dale Green family.
